Oxford Chamber Music Presents The Wihan string Quartet
'consummate instrumentalists in the great Czech tradition', the Wihan Quartet make a welcome return to our Oxford concerts. Their Beethoven and Dvorak recordings have been acclaimed.
Beethoven's opus 18 string quartets are all full of interest and invention. This one is notably in the same 'dark' key of C minor which he used for his fifth symphony. Dvorak's opus 34 quartet combines lyricism with attractive themes inspired by Czech folk music and Schubert's opus 161 brings together his consumate skill for melodic elegance with introspective elements.
The Wihan Quartet's outstanding reputation for the interpretation of its native Czech heritage, classical, romantic and modern masterpieces is widely acknowledged. Their impressive international career has included visits to major festivals in Europe and the Far East. They visit the United States and Japan regularly and have had highly acclaimed tours of Australia and New Zealand. They are frequent visitors to the UK and can often be heard on BBC Radio 3 as well as at Wigmore Hall, the South Bank and other venues.
