Art at the Edge at the Ashmolean

To celebrate the London Olympics 2012, the Ashmolean will display a group of bronze sculptures from Art At The Edge, a commissioned series of sculptural studies, representing different Olympic and Paralympic sports. Each sculpture is cast in bronze and made by a different artist to reflect the cross-section of contemporary British sculpture. Our president Paul Lewis is still involved in his two year exploration of the late piano music of Schubert and, in addition to having two appearances from him in 2012, we have taken the opportunity to extend this theme to include two of Schubert’s finest chamber works, the C major quintet and the Octet.

The Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake is an annual event held on the Spring Bank Holiday at Cooper's Hill, near Stroud. It is traditionally by and for the people who live in the local village of Brockworth, but now people from all over the world take part. The event takes its name from the hill on which it occurs. The event is traditional. From the top of the hill a round of Double Gloucester cheese is rolled, and competitors race down the hill after it. The first person over the finish line at the bottom of the hill wins the cheese.

The races have no greater aim than for individuals and teams to demonstrate their strength and fitness by racing whilst carrying a sack of wool – up and down a hill that reaches a gradient of 1 in 4. For our 2012 summer concerts, Cantores are teaming up with the early music ensemble The Six to perform a rich medley of choral and instrumental music from the Renaissance and Early Baroque period, when – very different from today – composers didn’t mind too much whether their music was sung or played.

After all, without our modern means to record or play back music electronically or mechanically, households and courts in the 16th and 17th centuries had to make do with whatever music-making tools they had to hand, whether voice or instrument.

Featuring original arrangements of classic wartime chart toppers including; In the Mood, Moonlight Serenade, American Patrol, Little Brown Jug and Tuxedo Junction, this concert will also include a tribute to the late, great Ted Heath.

Harmonies are provided by The Moonlight Serenaders, as well as sublime vocals from Catherine Sykes and Colin Anthony and swinging jazz band The Uptown Hall Gang. A fabulous night of vintage music.

That’s right, he’ll do everything you’ll ever do, but in one evening. So, in an average lifetime you’ll spend two years shopping, two weeks kissing and 18 months looking for lost things. You’ll also spend quite a while eating, queuing, crying and googling yourself. Alex is going to squeeze all those things into one show. It’ll be tremendous. And very funny.

Sit in comfort in our gallery, while storytellers light the fires of your imagination with an evening of Celtic influenced songs and tales. Famously a time for spirits to roam and witches to meet, for communities to embrace healing and incite revelry, Midsummer reminds us that the seasons and their stories can be imbued with strange powers.
